Sidmouth Steppers are inviting new dancers and musicians to join them as they begin their series of practice sessions in October.

Two taster sessions are taking place on Tuesday, October 3 and Tuesday, October 10, for female dancers and male or female musicians who would like to have a go.

The Steppers rounded off their 25th dance out season at the Swanage folk festival in early September, joining more than 60 other dance sides at the event. They say they're proud to represent Sidmouth at festivals and other events, near and far.

The North West Morris side has been dancing on Sidmouth seafront on Tuesday evenings throughout the summer, collecting money for two local charities and entertaining visitors and local residents out for an evening stroll.

With the dance out season over, practice sessions are beginning and the Sidmouth Steppers are keen to recruit new members aged 18 or over. No dancing experience is needed and players of all musical instruments are welcome. There is no commitment to join beyond the taster sessions, but Sidmouth Steppers are hoping new members will come on board, especially as they have just said farewell to a dancer and musician, Marlene and David Butler. Marlene joined the side in 2011, having only just moved to Sidmouth. She knew very little about Morris dancing but soon became a regular Stepper. David supported the side by carrying kit and later joined the musicians, playing bass guitar.

Alexa Baker from the Sidmouth Steppers said: "Our last cohort of ‘newbies’ were all new to the area and have since formed strong friendships with each other and their partners. You will become part of the very friendly and welcoming wider folk community too at festivals and local events.

"If it is something you have thought about - or even if you haven’t - please pop along to The Guide Hut, Lawn Vista, Sidmouth on Tuesday 3rd and 10th October at 7.30pm. All you need is a pair of trainers, comfy clothes and a drink."
